1 / Taste

Not only is South Africa the birthplace of Pinotage, but now also home to the first-ever white Pinotage! Mellasat White Pinotage 2019, thanks to whole bunch pressing, prevents the juice from obtaining colour from the skins. Barrel fermented and matured for eleven months, the wine is a paradox. Stirring on the lees gives the wine a slightly creamy, nutty character, balancing the tropical fruit and banana flavours, which are unexpected from a Pinotage. shop.mellasat.com

As a part of launching the latest vintages in its Heritage Heroes Collection (above), Nederburg adorned the trio in new packaging that proudly illustrates the history of the farm, honouring those who played a pivotal role in the legacy it holds today. For each of the wines – The Brew Master, a Bordeaux-style red blend; The Motorcycle Marvel, a Rhône-style red blend; and The Anchor Man, an old-vine woodfermented Chenin Blanc – bespoke, hand-illustrated labels were brought to life by Bravo Design, making each bottle an artwork in itself. nederburg.com

3 / Smell

For Port2Port’s founder and CEO, Nicolò Pudel, ‘on the nose, the most elegant and expressive wines are Pinot Noirs’. He’s a big fan of Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2020, a small vineyard in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, founded 2015 by long-standing Hamilton Russell Vineyards employee Berene Sauls. This Pinot Noir expresses clean and lifted wild red fruit and cranberry and red plum aromas with hints of baking spices and cloves. port2port.wine

4 / Touch

To accompany the release of its Tamboerskloof John Spicer Syrah 2016, Kleinood added an artistic packaging twist (above).

The artist collaboration wrapping was created by young South African artist Amy Rusch and is printed on recycled paper. Her layered approach results in an immersive experience of terroir and place in much the same way the wine does – a connection and expression captured beautifully in thread on various media. kleinood.com

5 / Hear

In a world first, five Cape Winemakers Guild Protégés, composers, and neuroscientists have collaborated to create a piece of music that pairs with any glass of Cabernet Sauvignon – scientifically using music notes to enhance tasting notes, all facilitated by Nedbank. Tasting Notes is the ultimate wine-tasting experience and passion mash-up; a new way of engaging with wine. nedbankcwg.co.za

6 / Feel the 6th sense

The recently released Krone Night Nectar Blanc de Blancs 2018 heroes the Chardonnay grape, and is a first of its kind in South Africa. A distinctly different Cap Classique from the celebrated Twee Jonge Gezellen, it is summed up as ‘bottled ancient wisdom’, harvested at night in cool and quiet conditions. The face of the new vintage release, Luthando ‘LootLove’ Shosha, describes it as having a ‘heaven-like taste and perfection’. We’ll drink to that!
