A lifetime of journeys

Few lives illustrate the power of purposeful exploration like that of Kingsley Holgate, whose 80th birthday marks decades of journeys bringing humanitarian aid and hope across Africa

Defender marked the 80th birthday of legendary South African explorer and humanitarian Kingsley Holgate on 28 February 2026, recognising a life dedicated to using adventure as a force for good across Africa. Holgate continues to lead purpose-driven expeditions, most recently the Defender Africa Traverse Expedition, delivering humanitarian aid, conservation support and health interventions to remote communities across Southern Africa.

For more than 25 years, Defender has partnered with Holgate, enabling access to some of the continent’s most challenging terrain to deliver life-saving supplies and outreach programmes. Since 2000, the collaboration has supported over 40 expeditions, distributing more than 481,000 mosquito nets, providing 224,000 pairs of spectacles, delivering 63 million litres of clean drinking water, and reaching hundreds of thousands of children through conservation and early childhood development programmes.

Kingsley Holgate has lived a life defined by using adventure as a force for good across Africa. As he celebrates his milestone 80th year, he is recognised as a legendary figure whose work continues to create meaningful impact.

Holgate remains actively engaged in leading major humanitarian journeys. In 2024, he completed the Afrika Odyssey Expedition, a year-long, 60,000-kilometre humanitarian journey across 24 African countries, during which his team distributed 15,880 insecticide-treated mosquito nets, helping protect tens of thousands of vulnerable mothers and children from malaria.

This was followed by the Greater Gorongosa Expedition in Mozambique, where the team combined malaria prevention, vision care and conservation education programmes while supporting one of Africa’s most important ecological restoration initiatives.

In 2026, Holgate has embarked on his latest mission, the Defender Africa Traverse Expedition – a three-month journey retracing a historic west-to-east route across Southern Africa along the Tropic of Capricorn, from Namibia’s Atlantic Coast to Mozambique, continuing vital humanitarian and conservation work in remote communities.

For more than a quarter of a century, Defender has been an enduring partner in these journeys, enabling access to places far beyond conventional reach – from remote deserts and floodplains to isolated rural communities. Built for extreme capability, durability and reliability in demanding environments, Defender vehicles enable the safe transport of life-saving supplies, specialist equipment and expedition teams across challenging terrain. Together, the partnership represents a shared legacy of resilience, exploration and meaningful impact across the continent.

Since 2000, the collaboration has supported over 40 humanitarian expeditions with significant results: more than 481,000 mosquito nets distributed, protecting an estimated 1.4 million women and children from malaria; 224,000 pairs of spectacles provided through the Rite to Sight programme; 36,000 LifeStraw water units delivering over 63 million litres of clean drinking water; conservation education reaching 750,000 school children; and more than 2.1 million nutritional meals delivered through early childhood development programmes supporting over 20 crèches.

This enduring partnership reflects the spirit of Defender – purposeful capability in service of humanity. As Kingsley Holgate continues to push boundaries in his eighth decade, Defender remains alongside him, enabling journeys defined not only by the roads travelled, but by the lives reached and the lasting impact created across Africa.
